How To Get Killer Testimonials For Your Blog

Testimonials are one of the most powerful ways to get people to click your “buy now” or “donate now” button – classic social proof. Finding two or three powerful testimonials takes very little effort. In fact, you’ll be surprised at how happy people will be to provide them.

However, you want testimonials about results that donors or customers got from doing business with you. Testimonials about your professionalism and earnestness are OK – if you’re trying to get a job at Quiznos, which you’re not trying to do.

Here’s an example of a great testimonial for Chris Garrett, who does blog consulting:

“Chris helped us connect some of those dots by identifying mission critical details that needed improvement, and making suggestions on how to fix them. As a result, we have seen a surge in indexing by major search engines since implementation. Chris’s expertise and professionalism is beyond reproach.” –Tobias Wright

how to write a great testimonial 231x250 How To Get Killer Testimonials For Your BlogThis testimonial has a “Lion’s Paw” structure:

  1. Thorn in paw – (site’s search engines rankings are poor)
  2. Thorn is gently removed – (Chris helped fix the problems)
  3. Paw is healed – (site surges in search engine rankings)

Suggesting this structure to your fans actually makes it easier for them to write the testimonial. Also, you’ll demonstrate respect for their time with a request that’s very specific. Finally, you’ll get a killer testimonial that will encourage folks to give you their money – yay! :-)

  • Just read http://tinyurl.com/cc6trr by @johnhaydon. I want testimonials for my blog. Is that begging?
  • @Kathryn - Wow - glad I could help. I'm sure they'll be glad to help also!
  • Thanks for the illustration. I have several clients that have been working with for a number of years and now I can put together a template that will help me ask for a testimonial for my website!
  • @Liara - Yes, most of the time people just say "Hey can you write me a testimonial?" Going this extra step makes it more valuable and easier for both parties.
  • Testimonials are indeed powerful tools. The draw attention on the back of books and also on websites and business literature. Thanks for highlighting a useful technique many people know about yet do not always do!
  • I think it's important to be as specific as you want your answers to be when making a request like this. Sometimes it feels like you're being rude for doing so. It's not rude. As you say, 'you'll demonstrate respect for their time'.

Like the "thorn in the paw" illustration!
  • I love your blog. Always useful. Well written. Great information. Makes me want to be non-profit (kind of).

    Thanks
