How KidsAreHeroes.Com Uses Social Media

I had the incredible opportunity to speak with Gabe O’Neill of Kids Are Heroes a couple of weeks ago and was completely blown away by two things:

  1. kidsareheroes 300x156 How KidsAreHeroes.Com Uses Social MediaHis unwavering sense of mission.
  2. He uses only Twitter for social media actions.

Kids Are Heroes recently won the competition for Richard Branson’s first ever PitchTV show! In this video, I talk about my meeting with Gabe and the four success factors that contributed to his success:

  1. Solid Sense Of Mission
  2. Remarkable Content
  3. Be Active With Social Media
  4. A Reason To Fight

  • John,
Thanks for telling the Kids Are Heroes Pitch TV story. I found three interesting points: 1. How they are only on twitter - so many npos feel that they must be on Facebook and other web 2.0 platforms when, in fact, it is possible to just choose one platform. 2. Use a medium like a rock star - they chose Twitter and used it exceptionally well to their end, and 3. telling stories is an highly effective method of moving people to act. Kids Are Heroes is essentially telling a story over and over - same theme with different chapters - and doing it so well that their fans want to help them succeed. Every nonprofit should find this video valuable and I thank you for taking the time to make it.
