The one rule I've found to be absolutely true - you must give before you get. Otherwise, you're just sapping the resources, time and energy of your followers.

Great post!

As an avid Twitter use, blogger, and social media gad about, this really sparks my interest. I tweet with a couple of these folks off and on, but none on a regular basis.

As to my thoughts?
I'm with Brogan; Twitter is a brand, there'll be others. Once M$ comes out with one built in, that'll be the one favored by millions.

Has it meant less blogging? Or detracted? On the contrary, it's driving me and others to write more than ever. 140 is just not enough to share a great idea. You can only give the gist or a link there.

Does it add value though? Heck yeah. Lots of things shared with me that I'd never get to see if I just waited on it turning up in Google or via link to a link on someone's blog.

About retweets, I'd say they're a blessing and curse. They have power but it's easily abused power. Some folks' entire tweet stream is just RT this or that. Often people get carried away linking and retweeting their own links.

Because of the high volume of retweets, some folks are actually ignoring those from just anyone. They'll want to see them from just the rockstars. That's a whole other issue not even mentioned here, though Guy touches on it briefly.

Cheers to a good read.

Great roundup. I agree with all of the above. Twitter is a marvelous chaos - it's flotsam and jetsam and kitsch and crap and rich fishing.

Twitter is online people-watching, with a potential for two-way communication. Bring a picnic.

I agree...if you don't try to reach out, you'll never know if they will respond. Which brings me to a whole different subject...why wouldn't they? Twitter is a two way street. No one is too good to not reply.
